Angostura Bitters were invented by Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert, a German surgeon general in Simón Bolívar's army in Venezuela. Based in Angostura, he used local ingredients that remain a well-kept secret to this very day. It will always be an iconic cocktail component, instantly recognisable by its massively oversized label, which was apparently a comedic error when Siegert’s sons separately designed a new label and new bottle without consulting each other on size.
