The Balvenie has released a range of whiskies that tell the story of this much-loved distillery and their craftsmanship, aptly named The Balvenie Stories. The Week of Peat speaks of the innovative spirit of these Speyside folk. Distillery Manager Ian Millar had visited Islay, inspired by the smoky malts he tasted there, he promptly ordered some peat. Now, each year for just one week, The Balvenie Master Distiller David C. Stewart MBE turns his attention to using Highland peat to dry the distillery’s barley.
Aged in predominantly American oak (but we think there might be a few Sherry barrels in the mix too) and bottled as a 17 Year Old, this much-loved whisky isn’t like Islay’s iodine-flavoured, maritime, medicinal Scotch. Highland peat is quite different to Islay peat, so don’t expect that phenolic punch, because the smoke is much more elegant. It’s lightly floral, with notes of blossom honey, butterscotch, heather, creamy vanilla fudge, orange zest, poached fruit, marzipan, porridge catching and burning, logs on the campfire and the fruit and spice of a toasted hot cross bun. It’s Balvenie, but maybe not as you know it.
For each whisky in The Balvenie Stories range, the distillery has created an audiobook of conversations between Global Ambassador Gemma Paterson and the workers at the distillery about that whisky, and David Stewart and Kelsey McKechnie sharing a dram with the people who made it possible. These can be streamed from their website while you settle back into the armchair with a dram.
