Benromach was established in Forres in 1898. But in 1993 it was bought by a family who have been bottling extraordinary whiskies for even longer than that Gordon & MacPhail. That’s why the Benromach 10 Year Old has received a bit of a makeover in recent years…
Benromach is a pioneering quality-orientated distillery specialising in handmade Scotch. They like to joke there are four ingredients that go into their whisky: the finest barley grown and malted to their specifications water from the Chapelton Spring in the Romach Hills yeast and the distillers who make it happen. It’s often described as a pre-1960s style Speyside style meaning that it’s beautifully balanced with a touch of smoke. Each handcrafted release is produced in a traditional manner using Scottish barley grown locally and malted with just a little peat smoke double distillation in copper pot stills and maturation exclusively in expensive first-fill Bourbon and Sherry casks.
We love that the Benromach 10 Year Old is bottled at a 43%. That slightly higher ABV gives it just a little more oomph and provides the option of adding a little water to open it up. And when you do you discover what we think of as cranachan on fire. By that we mean notes of forest fruits cream honey-roasted granola and smoke. But there’s much more to this complex dram than that there’s also crunchy apple ripe pear plum crumble black cherry toffee flapjack spiced gingerbread lapsang souchong prune truffle oil maple syrup and wool jumpers drying by the fireside. Without doubt one of the best value 10-year-old whiskies on the market.
