Black Tot’s Limited Edition 50th Anniversary Rum is a blend of rums sourced from Jamaica Barbados Guyana and Trinidad including liquid from lost distilleries such as the legendary Caroni and from mighty producers that are still operating like the fantastically funky Hampden and the five-time consecutive winner of the International Spirits Challenge’s “Rum Producer of the Year” Foursquare. The Guyana components include a 42 year old made in a wooden pot still and there’s even a splash from a world blend of original Navy rums continuously blended in wooden vats from the early 1800s to 1970. All of which makes this some highly sought-after rum indeed.
It’s an incredible dry tot the flavours are so complex and full-on that you’d almost be forgiven for thinking it had been spiced. There’s barbequed pineapples and banana; dark chocolate-covered raisins; stately home libraries full of polished wood dust and leather-bound tomes; mulled wine spices like cinnamon nutmeg and clove; caramelised tarte aux pommes fresh out of the oven and ever so slightly burned; Turkish coffee with a nutty baklava on the side; liquorice; tonka bean; orange peel; dried mint; fresh tarragon; cream; and finally a squeeze of lime. It was not chill filtered and no sugar was added making it as raw brash and well-travelled as the sailors of yore. Only 5 000 bottles were made of this rum so even the 3cl miniature here becomes highly collectable.
