This Kosher Wheat Recipe Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey was created by Buffalo Trace in partnership with the Chicago Rabbinical Council (cRc). They use the same high-quality grains, but it’s aged in specifically designated Kosher casks. To satisfy Passover requirements, those barrels were sold to a non-Jewish executive in a ceremony witnessed by a representative from the cRc. Once the seven-year ageing period had elapsed, it was bottled at 47% ABV after ensuring that all bottling lines had been cleaned thoroughly to make sure there was no contact with non-Kosher spirit. Buffalo Trace is the first major distillery to produce Kosher-certified whiskey in the United States. They release them after Passover each year, but because of their popularity, they sometimes take a little longer to get to us.

Buffalo Trace Kosher Wheat Recipe pours a glowing amber with flashes of orange. On the nose there’s cherry liqueur, brazil nuts, wildflowers, fresh orange, apricot pastries, mint, maple syrup, fresh red summer fruit and the dustiness of a stately home library. On the super-smooth palate, there’s lots of dry spice, tannic wood, more cherry, barrel char, vanilla cream, cinnamon and a little chilli heat. This really reminds us of a William Larue Weller.

Buffalo Trace releases are always big, strong and beefy, much like the ancient buffalo herds that carved their paths through the American wilderness. One such path led down to a crossing on the banks of the Kentucky River, where you’ll now find the Buffalo Trace Distillery. Although it has changed its name a couple of times, this is the oldest continuously operating distillery in the USA. “What about prohibition?”, we hear you ask. Even then, the distillery was allowed to remain operational, for “medicinal purposes” of course. Over the last 200 years, some of the most famous names in the world of distilling have worked there: E.H. Taylor, George T. Stagg, Albert B. Blanton, Orville Schupp and Elmer T. Lee. So, anything that comes out of its historic warehouse is worth a look.
