Classic Caol Ila is famed for its lighter body and punchy peat. But an extended 18 years of maturation makes this a different beast. Very much a late night dram for Islay fans the phenols have been mellowed and the smooth oak has added more weight. There’s lemon posset coconut oily Spanish almonds peat smoke dried herbs roasted peaches vanilla barley sugar and a seasoning of sea salt and black pepper. For many this is the stand out in the Caol Ila range but we recommend having a bottle of the 12 Year Old for serving with food and a bottle of the 18 Year Old for evening drams.

Caol Ila – pronounced ‘cull-eela’ – means “Sound of Islay” and refers to the position of the distillery near Port Askaig overlooking the water that separates the island from neighbouring Jura. Founded in 1846 the distillery has had a tumultuous history. But it has thoroughly earned its fame not just for its high-quality Single Malts but for its importance in blends such as Johnnie Walker Black Bottle and our beloved Compass Box.
