Dalwhinnie 15 Year Old is probably the perfect embarkation point for anyone setting out on a new adventure into the world of whisky and also a fine choice for a summer dram. We actually think it’s one of the most underrated distilleries in Diageo’s Classic Malts range because although it is famously soft it’s also incredibly complex. Kind of like a fine wine its delicate nuances grow on you and slowly beguile the senses. Bright and gorgeously fruity – think baked nectarines caramelised apple ripe pear and crisp citrus – Dalwhinnie 15 Year Old offers notes of floral honey sticky toffee pudding sponge cake and hot cross buns the faintest waft of smoke and a finish of nutty baklava and almond biscotti. Simply divine.
Located in the Cairngorm National Park Dalwhinnie is not only the highest but also one of the coldest distilleries in Scotland. In such harsh conditions you might expect a fiery belly-burner of a Scotch but not so. Dalwhinnie is about as smooth and gentle as they come. Stylistically it’s situated between the floral and grassy style of the Lowlands and the firmer richness of Speyside which begins some 25 miles to the north. Dalwhinnie was almost unknown prior to its inclusion in Diageo’s Classic Malts series in 1987 and the majority of the spirit produced there still goes into the Buchanan's and Black & White blends despite it being one of bestselling malts worldwide.
