Severo Arango y Ferro arrived in what is now Colombia in the late 18th Century to collect taxes for Spain. This powerful man was soon nicknamed Dictador. He fell in love with the local rum and began to trade it. Almost two centuries later one of his descendants Don Julio Arango y Parra created a distillery in the coastal UNESCO World Heritage Site of Cartegena and began to make rum to honour his forefather. Dictador was reborn. This multi-award-winning rum producer is creating some of Colombia’s finest spirits but remain very difficult to come by especially in Colombia itself.
