Although the weapon of choice at the bar for many great artists (Hemingway Picasso Manet Wilde Proust Verlaine and Poe to name a few) Absinthe owes much of its fame and infamy to Vincent van Gogh. While frequenting Café du Tambourin and the Moulin Rouge cabaret with the likes of Paul Gauguin Edward Degas and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec he would sip the “green fairy” as depicted in Toulouse-Lautrec’s Portrait of Vincent van Gogh created in chalk pastel in 1887. Distilled from the herb Artemisia absinthium known as wormwood Absinthe contains Thujone a terpene compound rumoured to have mind-altering effects. This was blamed for the artist’s spiral out of control his desire for Thujone eventually driving him to drink turpentine and eat his own paints. Although banned in 1919 “the Devil in a bottle” is now permitted once again provided the Thujone level falls below 10mg/kg as it does in this version…
Founded in 1898 at Forcalquier in the Haute Provence Distilleries et Domaines de Provence celebrated turning 100 years old by launching Absente 55° the first Absinthe legally authorised since the ban. This premium Absinthe liqueur cleverly blends 55% ABV alcohol (a little lighter than in van Gogh’s day) with wormwood mugwort star anise balm peppermint and green anise. This 10cl bottle is an artisan masterpiece that allows you to experience the forbidden flavour of bohemian 19th Century Paris.
