91 points, “The 2021 Fleurie from Clos de la Roilette is drinking well out of the gates, offering up pretty aromas of spiced plums, petals and orange rind, followed by a medium-bodied, supple and melting palate. Fleshy and fine-boned, it’s a pretty, demonstrative wine that will show at its best young.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Rich, deeply concentrated and extremely tangy; this wine is a fine choice for roast pork, duck breast or tagine.

Clos de la Roilette sits on the Fleurie side of the border with Moulin-à-Vent. In 1920, when the new boundary was drawn up, this winery found itself on what the owner considered the wrong side. In a rage, he refused to sell his wines in France (sending it all to Germany, Switzerland and the UK), or mention Fleurie on his label. Instead, he put a picture of his favourite racehorse “Roilette” on the front and renamed it Clos de la Roilette. Despite the fabulous terroir - the soils are rich in clay and manganese giving rich and intense wines – the original owner’s family lost interest in the winery, and it fell into disrepair. Fortunately, it was bought in the 1960s by the Coudert family and has been passed from Fernand to Alain.

The old vines are sustainably farmed, the wines are semi-carbonic fermented using native yeasts and they age wonderfully. Clos de la Roilette now sets the benchmark for Fleurie and is undoubtedly one of Beaujolais’ all-time greats. As the New York Times put it, “Alain Coudert’s Clos de la Roilette is a long-time favourite Fleurie producer whose wines should not be overshadowed by newer, more faddish names.” In short, this is an absolute classic.
