Don Julio 1942 Añejo Tequila pays homage to founder Don Julio González-Frausto Estrada who began distilling at the tender age of 17. Honing his craft for almost 40 years at his La Primavera distillery in the highlands of Jalisco he broke the mould of this drink being considered a drink for farmers and now most historians and aficionados recognise his as the first ever luxury Tequila.
No corners are cut in the production of this small batch labour-of-love. Made from 100% Blue Weber Agave it’s aged for at least two-and-a-half years in reclaimed white oak barrels. The result is a velvety melange of the finest Belgian chocolate caramels warm oak Madagascan vanilla ice cream sweet cinnamon and an array of tropical fruit so exuberant Carmen Miranda could fashion a hat from it. Don Julio is famed for its dinner table friendly squat bottles but a Tequila so striking and of such elegance required something a little more slender (even when it holds 2.5 bottles’ worth). Sip neat alongside tacos tlayudas quesadillas chocolaty Oaxacan mole or the Yucatán-speciality cochinita pibil.
