We’re pretty convinced that if this wine came from Champagne, it would cost two or three times the price.
That may sound like a bold statement, but let’s look at the facts. The Errázuriz Blanc de Blancs is a pure Chardonnay crafted using the same ‘traditional method’ made so famous by Champagne. 66% of the wine is aged in French oak barrels for seven months. This adds richness and creaminess and is an expensive and laborious technique favoured by only the crème de la crème, such as Krug, Billecart-Salmon, Louis Roederer and Bollinger. It was aged on the lees (the spent yeast that imparts the nutty and bready notes associated with the world’s finest sparkling wines) for five years, which is only a couple of years less than one might expect for something like Dom Pérignon. And finally, it was bottled in the fashionable Brut Nature style, i.e. without added sugar, which allows the Pacific Ocean-influenced terroir of the Aconcagua Costa vineyard to sing loud and clear.
Errázuriz Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature is a sensational Método Tradicional, shimmering with delicate and stylish bubbles. Expressive aromas of toasted sourdough, dried flowers, citrus sorbet and creamy marzipan greet the nose, while the palate pulses with vibrant poached pear, blossom honey, roasted nuts, lemon zest, marmalade and mille-feuille. Complex and arresting, this bottle firmly places Chile on the world map for fine sparkling wine.
Chilean wine is considered ‘New World’ by many. But when you learn that Don Maximiano Errázuriz Valdivieso founded Viña Errázuriz in 1870, it makes a bit of a nonsense of that outdated moniker. Today, under the watchful eye of Eduardo Chadwick Claro, Errázuriz is one of Chile’s most iconic and one of the most famous wineries on the planet.
