Critic and Italian wine expert James Suckling has previously described Saffredi as being “the Lafite [Rothschild] of Tuscany” and having tasted vintages dating back to its inception in 1987 he has only ever rated one more highly than this 2015. In fact his score placed it alongside Tuscan legend Masseto and ahead of the likes of Sassicaia and Tignanello. In short: this is not a red wine you are not going to want to miss out on.
A velvety blend of Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot and Petit Verdot harvested in a warm vintage and matured for 18 months in oak Saffredi delivers fruit as black as night coffee beans tobacco spiced dark chocolate sage rosemary dark chocolate and charred oak. Think tournedos rack of lamb Middle Eastern grills slow-cooked stews and ragu with pappardelle.
Based in the Tuscan fine wine hotbed of Maremma Fattoria Le Pupille is owned and run by Elisabetta Geppetti. Since its foundation in the 1970s it has grown from 2 to 75 hectares and now sits at the pinnacle for wine production in Morelino di Scansano. With a little help from the titan of fine wine Giacomo Tachis Gepetti launched her flagship Bordeaux-inspired Saffredi in 1987.
