Wine critic Matthew Jukes regularly pours this exceptional white on his 100 Best Australian Wines Roadshow and he has described past vintages as being “in a different league to virtually every other version of this grape that I have tasted.” The fruit come from Matt and John’s mate Caj’s vineyard near Kersbrook in the northern Adelaide Hills and Jancis Robinson’s website has previously called it a “pear flavour… summer refresher”. Crisp clean and moreish; we love it with a pear walnut and blue cheese salad.
Set up by Essex boy Matt Gant and South Australian John Retsas (the latter taking sole ownership of the company in June 2021) First Drop is part winery and part frivolous merrymaking in a ginormous warehouse abandoned by Penfolds. The brand crafts grapes grown by their friends into fun-loving and easy-going wines with remarkable distinction and texture. They also do this without using animal products in the fining process making the entire range vegan friendly.
