Their flagship 10 Year Old Export Proof – with its signature gangster lean and slightly higher alcohol level – deserves a space in absolutely any serious rum collection.
It’s made at the Foursquare Distillery in Barbados which is also responsible for giving the world the delights of Doorly’s Rum Sixty Six and Velvet Falernum. Distiller Richard Seale – the fourth generation of this family business and one of Barbados’ oldest trading houses – fiercely eschews the addition of sugar or flavourings so this is drier than many of its counterparts. Pulling its stopper unleashes a flurry of red apple crumble with vanilla custard hot cross buns frangipane barbequed bananas dark chilli chocolate caramelised walnuts apricot turnovers ginger fudge and black pepper. The lopsided bottle is based on a leather pirate flask and feels so good in the hand it’s hard not to pour yourself another.
