95 points, “Here we have wonderfully fragrant aromas of toffee and vanilla cream, leading to flavours of dried raisin and rich honey. Malty and densely packed, with a lifted green edge to the finish. Quite marvellous!” – The International Wine & Spirit Competition 2022

That huge score from the IWSC above was awarded by a tasting panel that included Richard Paterson OBE (a whisky maker so skilled he once insured his nostrils for £1.6 million with Lloyd’s of London), Dhavall Gandhi (formerly of Macallan and now at The Lakes) and Dr Jim Beveridge OBE (the legendary former Master Blender for Johnnie Walker). So, the Extremely Rare 18-Year-Old from Glenmorangie clearly impresses those in the know.

This Scotch spent 15 years maturing in ex-Bourbon casks, and then around 30% was transferred to Oloroso Sherry casks for three years. When the two parts reached 18 years of age, they were reunited and married together. The precious liquid filled into the bottle is warm and luscious, with notes of marmalade, floral honey, fig, juicy raisin, crème caramel, peach yoghurt, cinnamon and caramelised grapefruit, plus the faint whiff of a distant campfire. Don’t delay in securing a bottle because, as the name suggests, it’s extremely rare.

Glenmorangie is a distillery that needs little or no introduction, seeing as how it’s now a household name, even if it’s sometimes mispronounced. Established in 1843 (although alcohol production may have started as early as 1703), the folk of Tain have passed their skills down from generation to generation. But amidst all that tradition, they’ve never stopped innovating and only Prohibition and World War II have briefly stopped their remarkably tall whisky stills from running.
