The grapes for this wine are grown in the spectacular vineyard of Misawa on the foothills of Mt. Kayagatake and, at an altitude of 700 metres, the name ‘Akeno’ reflects the cherishment of its origins. With the mountains blocking out the rain clouds, the vineyard boasts the longest sunshine hours in Japan and that, alongside the cool climate of the highlands, results in an exceptional balance between structured acidity and concentrated fruit.

The wine is a blend of three varieties from a single vineyard, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with maturation taking place in French oak barrels for more than 18 months. 2017 saw the perfect weather conditions for growing vines so this vintage, highly rated by critics, is certainly one to try. Expect a wine that is richly deep and dark ruby in colour, medium bodied, slightly acidic and with subtle tannins. Breathe in the strong black and red fruits which develop into smoky, leather and pepper notes on the palate and finish with a gentle length and sumptuous taste.

With this vintage having already been rested for a few years, it can be enjoyed now or you can give those savoury nuances time to expand and develop and instead uncork in 2-3 years. Quaff on its own or pair with beef, veal, mushroom or rich vegetarian dishes to highlight the key characteristics in the wine.

Katsunuma was a town in Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture. It was the birthplace of the Japanese wine industry. The Misawa family behind Grace Wine can trace their winemaking history back to 1923 when Chotaro Misawa released his first wine from the town. The ‘Grace’ brand was established in 1953 and has been one of the country’s most famous names ever since. The winery is now run by Ayana Misawa who was born in Katsunuma Town. After studying in Bordeaux and Stellenbosch she worked at wineries in Australia, New Zealand, Chile and Argentina before returning to Japan with a wealth of experience to take over the family business.
