Suntory’s outstanding Hibiki 21-year-old has been reimagined in this extraordinary 100th Anniversary edition with Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo and his team challenging themselves and to use the legendary Japanese oak of Mizunara, instead of the traditional sherry casks, as a mark of respect to Japanese heritage. Shinji Fukuyo wanted to curate a different king of Harmony: one led, for the first time, by Mizunara and this new blend explores how a single detail can alter the whole alchemy of a whisky, reassessing and rebalancing harmony.
With its tender golden hue and refined and elegant notes of kumquat, jasmine and hints of soothing Japanese incense, the Mizunara’s influence is clear to see. The subtly sweet and floral flavour aromas playfully harmonise and elongate, bringing spiced Japanese sandalwood and agarwood notes to the forefront. Settling into a long and deep finish, the underlying notes of spiced Mizunara wood shine through and the impact of this unique cask shows its full force.
