Our team of expert Spirit Buyers – Nick Larsson-Bell (Retail Buyer of the Year 2022) and Bryan Rodriguez (judge for the IWSC, Spirits Business, World Drinks Awards and many more) – set out to find a brand partner to create a Cognac that we would be proud to put the Harvey Nichols name on. When considering provenance, heritage, quality, attention to detail and ambitious sustainability goals, there could really only be one producer for us, and that’s Hine.
Harvey Nichols spent three days in Cognac, exploring Hine’s vineyards, wineries and cellars, before enjoying a day with Cellar Master, Eric Forget. We asked him to craft a Cognac with the emphasis on decadence and he presented us with three totally unique and bespoke V.S.O.P. blends. After much careful thought and tasting, it was clear that two of the blends were the favourites – one with notes of lemon posset and the other with a praline-like richness. Unable to choose between them, we decided to blend them together. And that was when we had our eureka moment. It was clear to all of us that we had created V.S.O.P. Cognac like no other.
Harvey Nichols x Hine V.S.O.P. Cognac is a deeply comforting sipping spirit. The rich and biscuity nose opens with festive spices, vanilla, blossom honey, grapefruit peel, lemon zest and delicate chocolate-covered fudge. There’s also a complex nuttiness and earthy undergrowth notes, which instantly have us thinking about pairing it with a medium-bodied cigar. As you sip it, you discover a rich and silky-smooth texture, almost like melting chocolate. Then vibrant flavours of wildflowers, creamy lemon posset, shortbread and orange blossom build to a mesmerising crescendo, accompanied by sophisticated nuances of oak, vanilla, roasted Piedmont hazelnut and forest floor. Weighty and assured, this is a connoisseur’s choice and its combination of summery citrus and rich gianduja makes it a Cognac for all seasons.
