Patrón launched their single barrel program in 2014 allowing close friends and partners an opportunity to create their very own one-of-a-kind Tequila. Exclusive to Harvey Nichols this unique bottle is the first single cask Patrón to be made available in the UK.
As guests of this iconic brand Harvey Nichols travelled to Hacienda Patrón in Atotonilco El Alto Jalisco. There we tasted through a plethora of Tequilas made using different processes and aged in a range of barrel types for varying lengths of time. Our epiphany came when they poured the richest Añejo to ever pass our lips. With a few additional months of ageing that would become our Barrel Select.
Distilled in January 2017 this 100% Blue Weber Agave Tequila was filled into a single Allier oak barrel. Allier is a forest located between Sancerre and Burgundy in France. Here the oak trees grow straight up rather than out resulting in a wonderfully tight grain to the wood. When coopered into barrels the tightness of the grain adds finesse and spice to anything matured inside it making them the go-to choice for fine wine and spirits makers throughout the world. Our Tequila has been matured in just such a barrel for 33 months – twenty longer than required by law to be called an Añejo and almost long enough to become an Extra Añejo. It was then filled into just 366 limited-edition bottles. Single cask expressions have been de rigueur for Scotch and Bourbon for some time but this is something quite new for Tequila.
The Harvey Nichols Barrel Select Añejo Tequila is almost Cognac-like in its richness smoothness and complexity. On the nose vanilla and jasmine dance with roasted agave and ripe apricot; it’s tempting to dab it on as perfume. On the palate it’s like drinking the incredible Gran Patron Piedra from a glass that previously held Sauternes. A lingering perception of sweetness and wine combined with woodsmoke polished antique furniture golden raisins roasted agave oak logs and stone fruit drizzled with honey and spices. Consider sipping this rare Tequila alongside meaty mushroom or huitlacoche tacos; frijoles negros scooped with Manomasa totopos; or a piece of gently spiced chocolate at the end of the meal.
The team at Hacienda Patrón say: “We didn’t invent Tequila we just perfected it.” And when you taste their spirit it’s obvious that they really have. Except for filling the bottles every single step of the process is painstakingly carried out by hand in a socially and environmentally conscious manner. Resulting in truly inspiring Tequila in absolutely every sense.
