Kavka is named after the jackdaw. That highly intelligent bird which can be taught to mimic human speech and has been observed using tools is the smallest of the crow family and is known for its gregarious personality and its piecing grey eyes. Like its namesake Kavka Estate Vodka proves that even if your size may be diminutive having a distinctive character will make you stand out from the crowd. Bold and brazen Kavka is a small-batch Polish vodka that harks back to a time when this spirit had real character before the race to distil and filter it to oblivion began. And for that reason it’s fast becoming one of our favourite vodkas for making a Martini with.
Kavka was launched by Jan Woroniecki the restaurateur behind the Ognisko and Baltic restaurants in London. Having worked in the Eastern European restaurant industry for more than three decades he knew that there was more to vodka than the insipid and watery mainstream. So he teamed up with master distiller Urszula Wojcik the award-winning cocktail bartender Karol Terejlis and a small independent distillery that has been making vodka in the west of Poland for more than 200 years. Together they created a spirit from rye and wheat also adding a small quantity of aged fruit spirit made in a pot still by a producer in the town of Sandomierz. The spice of the rye the creaminess of the wheat and fruit from the plum and apple spirit combine beautifully. Expect notes of ripe apple prune lemon zest and rye bread spread thickly with marmalade.
