The Kilkerran 16 Year Old Single Malt is a rarer release from the resurrected Glengyle distillery.
It’s an interesting whisky, being a peated Campbeltown that’s aged in 70% ex-Bourbon casks, 20% ex-Sherry casks and 10% ex-Rum casks. On the nose, you get tropical fruit, pineapple and morello cherries with soft peat smoke. Once you take a sip, the tropical fruit notes get layered with additional notes of mango, papaya, coconut and apricots as well as golden syrup and creamy vanilla.
Kilkerran Single Malt is produced at the historic Campbeltown distillery, Glengyle, originally founded by the Mitchell family and owned by the J&A Mitchell group since its re-build and resumption of production in 2004.
Kilkerran pride themselves on completing all parts of the whisky production process on site, from the traditional floor maltings conducted at their sister distillery, Springbank, to the bottling of every edition at their bottling hall in Campbeltown. Sharing a production team and calendar with the neighbouring Springbank Distillery, Glengyle has a short production period of around three months per year, typically operational from October – December.
