The Kilkerran Heavily Peated is one of Harvey Nichols Senior Spirits Buyer, Nick Larsson-Bell's favourite annual releases. A cask strength Kilkerran, mainly ex-Bourbon Cask with a touch of Sherry influence.

On the nose there are sweet notes of icing sugar, creme brulee and patisserie goods all mingled with peat. On the palate, the peat is soft and has notes of marshmallow, gooseberries and Parma violets before finishing with notes of orange peel.

Once home to some thirty distilleries, Campbeltown was a major player in the world of whisky. However, most of them have long since gone out of business, and now only around four remain. The most famous is Springbank, who also produce the peated Longrow and the triple-distilled Hazelburn. Established in 1828 by Archibald Mitchell, Springbank is one of the few Scottish distilleries that has remained in the hands of the founding family, J. & A. Mitchell & Co. Ltd. In fact, it’s the oldest independent, family-owned distillery in Scotland. This family are also the force behind the Glengyle distillery where Kilkerran is made. William Mitchell, Archibald’s son, ran Springbank with his brother John. Allegedly a quarrel between them about sheep caused William to branch out on his own, creating Glengyle just down the road. Sadly, it ceased production in 1925. But luckily J. & A. Mitchell & Co. Ltd bought the buildings back in 2000, shooed the pigeons out and restored it to its former glory. They called their new whisky Kilkerran after the Gaelic ‘Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain’, the name of the original settlement on which Campbeltown now sits.
