96 points, “The old-vine component of the El Otero parcel, running to around seven hectares, supplies the fruit for this age-worthy Tinto Fino. After a frost-induced break in 2017, it's back with interest in 2018. Aged in new French oak, but not dominated by the wood, it's a finely judged red from Julio Sáenz with notes of blackberry and tangerine, filigree tannins and a long, textured finish.” – Tim Atkin MW

94 points, “Immensely complex with aromas of red fruit, leaves and forest floor. The palate brings some blackberry and minty flavours, fine tannin and well-integrated acidity. Lovely!” – Decanter World Wine Awards 2022

When the legendary La Rioja Alta decided to look beyond the confines of Rioja in the 1980s, they took their time because longevity is part of the DNA. After almost a decade of searching they found just the right place in the Ribera del Duero. They painstakingly monitored the plot’s progress for six vintages, selling the fruit until they were happy to put their own name on it. Finally, in 2000, they created the first Áster Tempranillo, or Tinta del País as the locals call it. Now, it tastes like a classic, textbook Crianza – one that feels like it could have been made here for hundreds of years.

Áster Finca El Otero is a pure Tempranillo from a vineyard in Anguix, Burgos. The old vines here create an immensely age-worthy red. So, maybe tuck a couple of bottles of this into a dark corner of the cellar. Although aged in new French Oak, the wood doesn’t overpower the fruit. Blackberry, blackcurrant, blueberry and tangerine peel are joined by notes of coffee, toffee, clove, vanilla, dark chocolate, balsamic, liquorice and toasted walnut. This is an immensely intense red, and we’ve fallen head over heels for it.
