Formed in 1890 by three families La Rioja Alta sets the benchmark for the entire Rioja region and have now spread their work into Ribera del Duero and Rías Baixas. This wonderfully retro wooden case explores some of their classic wine as well as some of their newer ventures.
The first wine is the Viña Alberdi Rioja Reserva 2015 – a model Spanish Tempranillo named after one of the founding families of La Rioja Alta and always highly rated by the critics. Next up there’s a pure Tempranillo from a single vineyard Torre de Oña Finca San Martín Rioja Crianza 2017 which was awarded 91 points by James Suckling and 90 points by Tim Atkin MW. Fermented with indigenous yeast this is a vibrant and very modern style Rioja. And finally we have the Lagar de Cervera Albariño 2019. In the late 1980s La Rioja Alta made a decision to stop making white Rioja and instead bought a vineyard in Galicia and created this wonderfully aromatic Albariño. Packed with citrus quince and orchard fruits it has become a classic and has previously been described as “one of the best Albariños on the market” by The Sunday Times.
