La Rioja Alta are famed for their classic Spanish reds which are aged for an inordinately long time in American oak barrels lovingly made by their own cooper. This wonderfully traditional producer still carries out its racking (the process of moving wine between barrels to remove the sediment) by hand and candlelight the old-school way. All of which makes this limited-edition Premium Rioja Gift Box a must-have present for any fan of Spanish wine.
The first wine this retro wooden case includes comes from 2015 which is important because La Rioja Alta’s Head Winemaker Julio Saenz says “Without a doubt 2015 was one of the best vintages ever for us here in Rioja.” That wine is Viña Ardanza Reserva 2015 which has been described by the International Wine & Spirit Competition as “astoundingly deep and complex”. Alongside that you’ll uncover the fourth vintage of Torre de Oña’s Martelo an experimental blend of Tempranillo Carignan Grenache and Viura from more than 60-year-old vines. The cork is holding in an explosion of red fruit combined with dark chocolate cloves vanilla and fig balsamic; this is definitely a Rioja to watch.
