Some two millennia later, Nico Myburgh changed the course of South African wine when inspired by the wines of Bordeaux he blended his Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot together – something that had rarely been done before that point. Meerlust Rubicon was born and there has been no turning back for South African wine.
This Trilogy Gift Case contains three vintages of Meerlust’s historic flagship wine: the classic 2016 (93+ points “Seamlessly assembled this is a triumph for the vintage.” – Greg Sherwood MW) and the new 2017 (96+ points “This really is another exquisite vintage with charm and poise.” – Greg Sherwood MW) and the 2018 (95 points Tim Atkin “elegant, polished, refined wine from a hot, dry vintage that illustrates the benefit of a cooler site. Floral, balanced and poised). Two of these vintages in South Africa were rated “extraordinary” by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and the other was still “outstanding”. Each wine will age elegantly for around two decades and they provide a rare opportunity to carry out a vertical tasting through the vintages. Expect hedgerow brambles, blackcurrants, black plums, rose petals, liqueur, chocolates, sweet liquorice, antique cigar boxes and cherry pie with whipped vanilla cream.
