In a Harvey Nichols exclusive, this year’s adventure to find the perfect 48th botanical for Monkey 47 Distiller’s Cut took them to the enchanting volcanic island of Pantelleria, near Sicily, where La Nicchia, a small farm specialising in the art of caper production, has been thriving for three generations. The caper bushes grow here in their ideal climate, bedecked with fleshy leaves, while the pale pink flowers, sometimes with hues of purple, make the rather robust shrub appear almost delicate. Capers are the shoots before they turn into flowers. This ‘Italian Caviar’, harvested by hand and salted, brings a nutty, sweet, and slightly tangy character that perfectly complements the gin.
Monkey 47 is a unique and ingenious gin from Germany that is produced using a jaw-dropping 47 handpicked plant ingredients. It is produced by Black Forest Distillers in memory of a man called Commander Collins who lived in Berlin at the end of the Second World War and sponsored an egret monkey called Max at the local zoo. The myriad of botanicals of which a third come from the Black Forest are what give the gin its unrivalled complexity and quality. The chief attraction however is the use of fresh cranberries as a Black Forest ‘secret weapon’. The quality of all ingredients is fully brought to bear through masterly distillation and maturing in traditional earthenware containers. This complex spirit has a sweet flowery aroma with a hint of peppery spices and subtle bitter fruit notes of cranberries making it an ideal base for both classic and more eccentric cocktails."
