- Margaret River’s Moss Wood is a winery whose wines regularly surpass their rivals in California, Bordeaux and Burgundy.
- Their Chardonnay 2019 is a revelation. Initially it sings of summertime with orange blossom, peach, nectarine, lime and quince. Then its oak influence morphs the experience seamlessly into something wonderfully breakfasty: oatmeal, marmalade, hot cross buns, bagels with butter and cream cheese, and vanilla yoghurt. Seemingly sprinkled with roasted nuts and sesame seeds, this wine is beautifully put together, with no edges and not a foot out of place in the whole merry dance. Pour alongside rich dishes and creamy sauces, or at any time you might select and top Burgundy.
- Moss Wood, in Wilyabrup, was first planted in 1969. Clare and Keith Mugford took ownership in the 1985 and shortly after the Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine bestowed an “exceptional” ranking upon them. For those not familiar with Langton’s, it’s an auction house that created a classification that has become the honour roll of Australia’s top fine wines, judging wineries on the demand in the market over at least a decade, rather than simply relying on one critic’s opinion on a single tasting. Moss Wood’s wines are elegant, stylish and harmonious, making them not just some of Australia’s finest, but significant challengers to the Old World.
