92 points “Spicy, full throttle and loads of tannin in the mouth. Nicely chewy.” - Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
92 points “The type of full-weighted Australian shiraz that many expect. Iodine, clove and boysenberry billow toward a nourishing and forceful finish and the reality is that this cuvee, as with so many in the stable, is reliable and delicious.” - James Suckling
There’s nothing quite as a warming as juicy Australian Shiraz at its finest. Full-bodied, rich and generous, Bin 28 was inspired by the Kalimna Vineyard in the Barossa Valley that Penfolds bought back in 1945. Now it’s made using grapes from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Padthaway, Wrattonbully and Clare Valley. 2021 saw low yields across most regions but the fruit quality was exceptional, producing a benchmark Bin 28 that’s approachable now but also with the capacity to cellar for up to 30 years.
With generous and lifted aromatics, this sweet and savoury blend brings forth a fascinating concoction of umami notes with roast meat pan scrapings, dark soy sauce and sopressa salami sitting alongside char sui pork, five spiced quail, rosemary and oregano. Dark fruit notes of ripe plumbs and blackberries also appear with floral potpourri, violets, black tea, ground allspice and toasted ajwain seeds – exotic, intoxicating and alluring. Developing mocha, chocolate and espresso tones provide a delightful depth to the rich, sweet and fruity palate and all converge with juicy acidity, bold structured tannins and a long lingering finish. It’s a real treat especially if served with a slow-cooked chilli or Mexican mole.
Penfolds is certainly Australia’s, and possibly one of the world’s, most iconic wine producers. Established in 1844, it boasts an enviable history that most wineries in the Old World would give their right arm for. Most famous for its flagship wine, Penfolds Grange, which is the very definition of Australian fine wine and the 1955 vintage was even described by Wine Spectator as one of the “Wines of the Century”. Penfolds owe much of their success to Max Schubert, their winemaker, who travelled to Europe after World War II and came back with all kinds of secrets. His innovative, often multi-regional blends have become part of the DNA of Penfolds and now the wines are the choice of connoisseurs and collectors all over the world.
