Even if you close your eyes and imagine what the perfect Australian Cabernet Sauvignon would taste like when you taste this it will still blow your socks off. That’s why this vintage was awarded an exceptional 96 points in James Halliday’s Wine Companion.
While the rest of the world is hung up on creating wines specific to certain regions Penfolds makes multi-regional blends taking the best nuances and characteristics from various areas and combining them to complex and dramatic effect. Bin 407 does just this using incredible fruit from all the big-hitting areas like Padthaway McLaren Vale Barossa Valley Coonawarra and Wrattonbully. French oak is used to add finesse and mulled wine spices while American oak layers in coconut vanilla and pine notes. The result oozes crème de cassis sour cherry black olive tapenade blackberry soy sauce orange zest and that roast meat and hoisin combo of crispy duck pancakes. And that finale would make a very complementary food match.
Penfolds is certainly Australia’s and possibly one of the world’s most iconic wine producers. Established in 1844 it boasts an enviable history that most wineries in the Old World would give their right arm for. Most famous for its flagship wine Penfolds Grange which is the very definition of Australian fine wine and the 1955 vintage was even described by Wine Spectator as one of the “Wines of the Century”. Penfolds owe much of their success to Max Schubert their winemaker who travelled to Europe after World War II and came back with all kinds of secrets. His innovative often multi-regional blends have become part of the DNA of Penfolds and now the wines are the choice of connoisseurs and collectors all over the world.
