Pierre Péters Cuvée de Réserve Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut Champagne has been described by Jancis Robinson as “really quite fine and rewarding” and also as “a more friendly approachable wine than the Extra Brut.” To be honest we’d like to get friendly with all the wines from Pierre Péters but we do have a real soft spot for this one. The wine comprises pure Chardonnay picked from Grand Cru villages in the Côte des Blancs and it’s matured on the lees (the spent yeast that gives Champagne its creamy nutty and bready character) for two years. Expect a vivacious Champagne that buzzes with energy salinity and flintiness. Elegant notes of almond hazelnuts pear skin apple acacia buttery brioche candied citrus zesty lemon juice apricot pastries sweet spice beach pebbles and sea spray all combine in this moreish and deeply complex wine. This is very much an NV Champagne for those in the know.
Richard Juhlin one of the world’s leading Champagne experts who holds the world record for the most Champagnes ever tasted says “Pierre Péters is a hidden treasure of Champagne… and the prices are laughable considering the quality of the wines.”
Rodolphe Péters only took over Champagne Pierre Péters in 2007 and is already one of the most respected growers in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Widely considered to be among the finest produced in the region his wines are renowned for their mineral power and their ageing potential. The non-vintage bottles incorporate a very high proportion of reserve wine carefully assembled over decades in a kind of solera system called a Perpetual Reserve similar to those used by the likes of Bérêche & Fils Jacques Selosse and Louis Roederer. This was started in 1988 and so now contains more than 20 different vintages resulting in wines of incredible complexity.
