Intense and complex this pure Sangiovese is laced with raspberry cherry iron vanilla cinnamon dried flowers smoked pepper chalk and notes of cherry tomato on the vine. Matured in a combination of large Slavonian and smaller French oak barrels; what emerges after 12 months is an aromatic red that’s perfect for pizza night slow-cooked ragù tomato-based pasta dishes and goulash.
Although only tiny Tuscany’s Pietroso has been famous since the 14th Century. Today it’s run by Gianni Pignattai and his family. When his uncle Domenico Berni started making wine here in the 1970s it was just half a hectare and widely acknowledged to be the smallest estate in Montalcino. Still only five hectares today – a hectare being about a football pitch – they make old-school but extremely elegant Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino which they age in the garage beneath their home. What dumbfounds us is the value for money and attention to detail you’ll find at Azienda Agricola Pietroso.
