Pusser’s (whose fine spirits have been described by Forbes as the “Single Malt of Rum”) takes its name from a mispronunciation of ‘purser’ – the ship’s supply officer who would give out the daily tot of rum. To make sure that the sailors’ ration wasn’t being watered down it was tested by dousing a little gunpowder in the rum and then lighting it. If it didn’t light there would be a big problem maybe a trip to Davy Jones’ Locker.
Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Spiced Rum is a traditional British Navy rum from Guyana that has been mellowed with a blend of banana vanilla chocolate cinnamon and ginger. The base was made to a recipe much like the one that would have been served for the last time when the Royal Navy discontinued its daily ration of rum on 31 July 1970 but the spice and fruit is something altogether new. Bottled at the “Original Admiralty Strength” of 54.5% it’s a bold explosion of spice cola bottle sweets banoffee pie hot cross buns gingerbread walnut baklava and chocolate. But what we love about it the most is that higher ABV giving a kick to cocktails in every sense.
