The much-loved and highly decorated Redbreast 12 Year Old is released in small batches at cask strength previous editions have received 97 points from Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible on two separate occasions and others have caused the critics at Whisky Advocate to say “I can’t think if I’ve ever tasted a better Irish whiskey ” and “I swear you feel more Irish with every sip.” Picking up gold medals left right and centre including Best Irish Whiskey Overall at the Irish Whiskey Awards 2018 this is simply one of those whiskies you must try.

Created at Midleton this is one of the distillery’s most full-bodied whiskies. Like the robin redbreast on the label you’ll soon have a warm glow in your throat and chest. Although this is marketed as Redbreast “uncut” they actually handpick each one of these natural strength releases for its outstanding quality so it is much much more. This batch is an explosion of rum-soaked figs sultanas and dates coupled with banana pineapple upside-down cake crème brûlée stewed pears baked apples toasty oak barley sugars sesame oil granola malted milk biscuits Werther’s Original and a squeeze of lime. We could go on and on and on the complexity is just immense.

Redbreast is a living legend of the Irish whiskey scene. Made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley that’s triple-distilled in a traditional copper pot still it first appeared in 1912 when Gilbeys began selling a whiskey distilled by Jameson’s that they had matured for 12 years. Although production ceased in 1985 it was soon re-launched due to popular demand and is now better than ever.
