Roberto Sarotto gives us Dolcetto d’Alba, the “little sweet one”, from Alba in Piedmont. The Dolcetto is an everyday wine known for its fruity characteristics and dry lingering aftertaste and this 2021 vintage is a standout example which is well balanced with fruit notes and hints of complexity. If you are wanting an Italian red that is great value, look no further.
There is a softness to this wine when first breathing in its aromas. Sweet fruits of blueberries, raspberries and damsons are gently aromatic with hints of vanilla, chocolate and herbs. The power of the wine appears with the first sip when pronounced ripe fruits carry through along with star anise, liquorice and granite. The touches of complex spice bring structure and depth to the wine, but all the while softened by the ripe fruit flavours. It is smooth and balanced with a hint of tannin and a lingering bittersweet finish. A versatile wine that would make an excellent companion to cured meats, soups, pasta and light red meat dishes as well as fish. The Dolcetto can also be slightly chilled in summer months which would also make it an enjoyable red to serve alongside cold starter dishes.
Roberto Sarotto is the seventh generation to lead this family-owned estate. Until his arrival at the helm, the family sold their grapes to cooperatives and other growers. From 1991, he vinified all the estate’s grapes; and in the same year he bought a 20-hectare estate in Barolo. Driven by his commitment to quality and innovation, Roberto Sarotto produces wines that capture the essence of Piedmont’s rich winemaking heritage while embracing modern techniques and practices.
