Any new project from Master of Wine Steve Smith needs to be firmly on the radar of a true fine wine lover…
CRU is the latest creation from Steve Smith MW (a legend in the New Zealand wine game who has worked at Villa Maria and Craggy Range) and Brian Sheth (the American businessman and wildlife conservationist who is presumably bankrolling the initiative). The idea behind it is to create a contemporary negociant business buying grapes from some of the country’s greatest growers and using them to create wines focussed on terroir and T?rangawaewae. Terroir as we all know is the French word that describes a wine’s sense of place. T?rangawaewae is M?ori word that defines a place to stand in the world where one feels empowered and connected.
The Heretaunga Albariño is a rare treat. We all know how good New Zealand is at doing aromatic whites but precious little of their Albariño (the grape so loved in northwest Spain) makes it to the UK. This one comes from Hawke’s Bay and it bristles with lemon lime crunchy nectarine peach melon sorbet honeysuckle pine nut pizza dough spice and beachy salinity. The grapes were picked on the Howell vineyard in the Bridge Pa Triangle and Smith & Sheth use old oak barriques for fermentation and maturation which accounts for the gorgeous texture and depth. Move over Sauvignon Blanc because New Zealand Albariño has just arrived.
