91 points, “The 2019 Pombal do Vesúvio (Quinta do Vesúvio) is a blend of 55% Touriga Franca, 40% Touriga Nacional and Tinta Amarela for the rest, aged for eight months in used French oak. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. Spicy, fresh and beautifully constructed, this has fine depth, better intensity of flavor and a backbone. The tannins are ripe, though. This can be drunk now, but it should also age pretty well and develop. This is a very nice value.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
90 points, “Red table wines from classic Port producers are where to look for value in Portugal. Symington Family Estates produces this wine from one of their great Douro Superior estates used to make the world’s finest Ports. Marked herbaceousness on the nose. Red fruit (cherries) moving into black fruit (blackberries) notes. Dark chocolate and mocha on the back palate add a layer of richness, making this the perfect ‘fireside’ wine.” – Decanter
It’s no secret that we’re massive fans of this producer, not just because of their Ports, but also for their ever-expanding range of top-notch wines.
This wine from Quinta do Vesuvio (one of the greatest estates in the Douro Valley) is made using grapes grown on terraces around their dovecote – known as a ‘pombal’ in Portuguese. Silky, floral and immensely expressive, this red pulses with black plum, wild berry jam, blackberries, crushed rocks, gentle smoke, pine and forests after the rain. A perfect drop for autumn evenings.
The Symington family acquired the historic, picturesque and remote Quinta do Vesuvio 30 years ago. Although they’ve made significant investment in this prestigious estate, things are still done very traditionally with 50 treaders employed to stomp the grapes in granite lagares. Established in 1565 Quinta do Vesuvio boasts some of the finest terroir in Douro and shouldn’t be missed by Port lovers and fans of big reds. The Symington family are not only the world’s leading producer of premium Port, but they’re also the biggest vineyard owner in the Douro Valley – a UNESCO World Heritage Site of jaw-dropping beauty.
