Talisker has only ever bottled one whisky older than this but that went straight to a private customer in China. Uniting the weather-beaten wildness and rural remoteness of the Isle of Skye with the warmth and bustling ports of Spain’s Province of Cádiz this 40 Year Old is the inaugural release in what will no doubt become the extremely collectable Bodega Series.

The Bodega Series will be an exploration of Sherry cask finishes celebrating Talisker’s ties to the Sherry Triangle that date back to the early 1900s. Heavily influenced by the sea the range promises to recreate the style of whiskies being produced at the beginning of the 20th Century.

Talisker Bodega No. 1 was distilled in 1978 and has been finished in casks that previously held the more than 40-year-old Quo Vadis Amontillado Sherry from Bodega Delgado Zuleta. That Sherry received 97 points from Wine Advocate and was described as a both “exceptional” and a “reference point” for the entire wine style and region. Delgado Zuleta is one of the oldest if not maybe the oldest Sherry houses still producing. In 1978 they merged with Benito Rodriguez La-Cave and it is from that company’s ancient stocks that Quo Vadis is created. This makes the 1978 vintage doubly pertinent for this phenomenal whisky.

Speed is of the essence if you want to secure Talisker Bodega 40 Year Old as only 2 000 bottles have been released each with screen-printed labels and hand-carved wooden cases inspired by the arches of the Sherry bodegas. The liquid contained within has been described as: “A magnificent lion-hearted old Talisker rich with the sophistication of age yet still full of life and retaining the maker’s familiar maritime and spicy character.” Displaying sultanas snuffed candles hedgerow jam charred orange vanilla pastry stewed Bramley apples spiced pears walnut toffee sandalwood and Talisker’s classic seasoning of sea salt and fiery pepper. Do not for one moment think that this 40-year-old lion cannot roar and bite.

For anyone born in 1978 this is the ultimate gift. But be quick because most of the bottles will likely end up in the collections of whisky connoisseurs and investors.
