This is a call (geddit?) to all the Foo Fighters fans out there…

Dave Grohl is a big sake lover. So to celebrate the Grammy Award-winning rock band’s 25th anniversary and the release of their 10th album called ‘Medicine at Midnight’ the Foo Fighters have collaborated with Tatenokawa to brew a pair of unique sakes. Harvey Nichols is proud to exclusively present a gift box featuring both sakes and additional treats. Due to limited availability and high demand these will limited to one per customer. Contains:

  • 1 x Foo Fighters x Tatenokawa Hansho Blue Junmai Daiginjo Sake 720ml 15%
  • 1 x Foo Fighters x Tatenokawa Hansho Silver Junmai Daiginjo Sake 720ml 15%
  • 2 x Foo Fighters Sake Cups
  • 1 x Foo Fighters Medicine at Midnight Album (Limited Edition Japanese Version)

Foo Fighters songs were played during the crucial fermentation process for Hansho Blue and Hansho Silver so these sakes are imbued with their much-loved music. In honour of the new album title they are named ‘Hansho’ because it means ‘Midnight’ in Japanese. It’s unclear whether they have any medicinal qualities though. Hansho Blue was inspired by the slightly more pop aspects of the band’s sound and has gorgeous aromas and a light sweetness. Hansho Silver expresses the heavy metal elements of the Foo Fighters’ music having a weighty and reverberating feel a more expressive flavour and a whip of sharpness in the tail. Both are Junmai Daiginjo (the most refined sake grade) and both were crafted to a rice polishing ratio of 50% (this means that half of each rice grain was gently polished away). We recommend sipping Hansho Blue chilled and Hansho Silver warm preferably from the Foo Fighters sake cups (known as ‘ochoko’) at around midnight while listening to Medicine at Midnight at full volume. Then just sit back and enjoy the ‘everlong’ finish of each sake.

Tatenokawa (meaning “Castle Brook”) is a sake producer with a long and illustrious history going back almost two hundred years. What we love about them is that they don’t get bogged down in all that tradition though leaving them free to innovate and spread the word of sake culture throughout the world. So expect a very modern style of sake aimed at a younger audience and also one or two very exciting celebrity collaborations. Located in Sakata City Tatenokawa was the first brewery in Yamagata Prefecture to make only Junmai Daiginjo – the most refined kind of sake. They focus on locally grown rice and particularly one called Dewasansan a sake-specific rice that creates complex slightly sweet and wonderfully aromatic flavours that remind us of top-quality Pinot Gris.
