We’d never call Richard Kelley MW (a.k.a. The Liberator) an old man, but his South African version of a Burgundian Chardonnay is as catchy as a nursery rhyme, even if his puns leave a little to be desired.
Those who remember ‘Episode 35 – Dial P for Pinot 2020’ will know that Richard Kelley is a big fan of the Côte d’Or style. This is his homage to the region’s Chardonnay, but made by the extremely talented Johnnie Calitz in the cellars of Glen Carlou. This much-loved producer, located a few minutes from the university town of Stellenbosch and about half an hour’s drive from Cape Town, is famed for its exquisite Chardonnay. So, this is a major coup for The Liberator. Expect a distinctly Burgundian experience at a fraction of the price and with a little additional sunshine in the mix.
As a panel taster for South African Wine Magazine, a contributor to the highly respected Platter’s South African Wines Guide and a certified Master of Wine, Richard Kelley is one of the most respected authorities on South African wine in the world. Over three decades in the industry, this Cape Crusader has made a lot of friends throughout that great winemaking nation. Every time he visits the Cape, he pops in to see his buddies and rummage through their cellars, uncovering great wines that don’t quite fit in the winery’s portfolio, are deemed too experimental or that they plan to simply fill into big blends. On discovering these gems, Richard – going by his alter ego Rick – ‘liberates’ them, bottles them and sells them under the small-batch label The Liberator. Each one is completely unique and when it’s gone, unlikely to ever be repeated. This one is Episode 38 in the series, it hails from Simonsberg-Paarl and only 355 cases were ever made.
