As a panel taster for South African Wine Magazine a contributor to the highly respected Platter’s South African Wines Guide and a certified Master of Wine Richard Kelley is one of the most respected authorities on South African wine in the world. Over three decades in the industry this Cape Crusader has made a lot of friends throughout that great winemaking nation. Every time he visits the Cape he pops in to see his buddies and rummage through their cellars uncovering great wines that don’t quite fit in the winery’s portfolio are deemed too experimental or that they plan to simply fill into big blends. On discovering these gems Richard – going by his alter ego Rick – ‘liberates’ them bottles them and sells them under the small-batch label The Liberator. Each one is completely unique and when it’s gone it will never be repeated.
This case contains an incredible Riesling made by Boplaas using fruit they pinched from an apple farmer in Elgin. Fermented completely dry only 240 cases were made and they were bottled without filtering so you might find a wine diamond (tartrate crystal) or two in it. Zesty and incredibly summery it buzzes with grapefruit lime lemon and crunchy green apples so the farmer should be happy. There’s also a sensational Pinot Noir of which only 1 200 bottles were created. Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock and the Côte d’Or it comes from a plot in Simonsberg-Paarl owned by the highly respected Glen Carlou winery. Juicy silky and full of complex plot twists and intrigue. And finally we have two 250ml cans. This is a format that’s blowing up at the moment and Jancis Robinson MW has said “Best canned wines I have tasted recently were The Liberator… They look great too.” Vasco and the Explorers is a South African take on Vinho Verde made from Alvarinho (maybe better known by its Spanish name Albariño). And The Francophile is pure unadulterated and juicy Syrah reminiscent of a young Rhône red - all ripe red and black fruit flavours lily aromas and a twist of black pepper.
