94 points “Deep red/purple colour. The bouquet is likewise bright fresh clean and attractive loaded with blackberry flavours and intense palate flavour medium to full-bodied and with a nice touch firmness to the tannin grip. This has real depth of flavour richness and plenty of oomph. Fruit-sweet core is typical of the vintage.” – The Real Review
The Steading is a celebration of old vines. Crafted from ancient patches of Grenache Mataro and Shiraz that survived phylloxera in the 1880s and the Barossa’s vine-pull scheme in the 1980s. It’s a masterpiece in saving historic cultivars and farmers working together. The team that makes Torbreck admit that this is one of their all-time favourites and it’s not hard to see why.
Slightly unexpectedly for a GSM blend The Steading has quite a Burgundian style (maybe even Nebbiolo-like) displaying notes of cherry raspberry jam rhubarb crumble stewed plums violet truffle Chinese five spice dried flowers liquorice worn leather orange peel and herbes de Provence. Although powerful this is a surprisingly elegant wine from Torbreck that will continue to improve in the cellar.
The Australian legend that is Torbreck was established by David Powell in 1994. This incredible wine was made by Powell before he was unceremoniously ousted from the company by the tech billionaire Pete Kight. Tobreck takes its name from a forest near Inverness in Scotland and The Steading continues the Scottish reference taking its name from the traditional Celtic farm.
