Drink to stories untold, the truth coming to light and hopefully changing times with the “spicy but sweet” Uncle Nearest 1884 Premium Whiskey, awarded a gold medal at The Luxury Masters 2022 hosted by The Spirits Business.

Nathan Green, known as Uncle Nearest by his family and friends, was probably the greatest whiskey maker that the world never knew. Although almost entirely written out of history, as many former enslaved people have been, his legacy is immense and should be shouted from the rooftops. He was the first African-American master distiller on record in the USA; he taught a certain Jack Daniel (the most famous whiskey maker who’s ever lived) the intricacies of distilling in the mid-1800s; and he’s widely regarded to be the man who perfected the Lincoln County Process – the technique of filtering whiskey through sugar maple charcoal prior to maturation in charred oak barrels that defines Tennessee whiskey. The unique approach he used was most likely passed down to him from West Africa, where water was filtered through charcoal to purify it. So, in short, there would be no Tennessee whiskey and no Jack Daniel’s without the master craftsman and innovator Nathan ‘Nearest’ Green.

Uncle Nearest 1884 Small Batch Whiskey is bold, yet unbelievably smooth. It was crafted using barrels selected by Uncle Nearest’s founders, which were blended together by Victoria Eady Butler (Nathan ‘Nearest’ Green’s great-great-granddaughter). A fine choice for classic cocktails, especially a Whiskey Sour or Manhattan. Honey, flapjack, brown sugar, maple syrup, orange peel, pain au chocolat, cinnamon bun, Nutella, nougat, tobacco, oak spices, fiery ginger and warming pepper; perfect for enjoying with your nearest and dearest.
