In fact they told me they are keeping more wine to have some older vintages to blend for this Reserva Especial because in the last few years the wine has been a little too young for the style that it used to have in the past. Although Vega Sicilia’s Único garners all the plaudits we consider this estate’s multi-vintage blend the true jewel in their crown and one of Spain’s finest wines. Único Reserva Especial is a near-perfect red in every release taking away the vagaries of vintage it shows the true personality of Vega Sicilia.
The 2020 Release was taken from a selection of 59 barrels of Tempranillo and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon from 2008 2009 and 2010 vintages. The experts at Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate haven’t rated a release more highly than this since 2014. With a potential ageing window of 40-60 years this Único Reserva Especial is an elegant symphony of cherry wild strawberry tangy blackberry black tea hot cross bun spices autumn leaves orange peel Christmas cake cured meat worn leather and the wonderful aromas that meet you when opening a humidor. Consider pairing with game a rack of lamb truffle ravioli or a whole roasted squash.
Established in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves Vega Sicilia has been the apogee of Spanish wine for more than a century. It’s the county’s First Growth; Hugh Johnson compares it to Château Latour and Michael Broadbent MW likens it to Château Lafite meanwhile Jancis Robinson draws comparison with Pomerol and Robert Parker calls it simply “the most prestigious wine estate in Spain”. The estate’s low-yielding old vines – some of which are more than 100 years old – produce perennially high-scoring reds.
