The G.V.B Red is one of the flagship wines from this iconic South African producer. Vergelegen only source the grapes from the windy and exposed Rondekop vineyards in Stellenbosch. The extreme conditions result in thick-skinned berries with immensely concentrated juice. Those grapes in turn create a red that’s built to last. Aged in French oak for 18 months, the 2016 is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, which is unusual as most years have a splash of Cabernet Franc and sometimes a little Petit Verdot. This unique vintage is brimming with plum, chocolate, graphite, crème de cassis, black cherry, fruitcake, tomato leaf and cedar. Rich and forthright, this is a wine that will continue to improve for a decade or more. We like to break this bottle out of the cellar for important Sunday roasts, beef wellington, game or a South African-style braai (a few sausages on the barbeque are not going to cut it for a wine of this quality).
Vergelegen, meaning “situated far away”, is a multi-award-winning estate that has a history spanning more than 320 years. It was given to the Governor of the Cape, Willem Adriaan van der Stel, in 1700, which makes it far older than many of the famous names in what we consider wine’s ‘Old World’. The gardens and private nature reserve are the stuff of dreams, and the wines are made by André van Rensburg with a little guidance from the world-famous consultant Michel Rolland.
