Redefining the art of vodka.
Inspired by the world of fine art X Muse is thought to be Scotland’s first blended barley vodka. For us this is one of the finest sipping vodkas we’ve ever tasted. It has so much character and a silky texture that's simply to die for. X Muse dazzles with notes of baked apple roasted granola lemon zest salty baked potato skins peppery spice farmhouse cider pear drops and freshly milled grist. If you’re not into sipping vodka neat we recommend this for a Martini or simple vodka-heavy cocktails because that way you won’t dilute its artistry.
X Muse pronounced ‘Tenth Muse’ is a Scottish Barley Vodka created by blending vodkas distilled from two different heritage barley varieties Plumage Archer and Maris Otter. The former was the world’s first commercially produced cross-bred barley and is renowned for its sweet malty and caramel flavours. The latter is the Rolls Royce of malts loved by traditional and craft brewers throughout the land and it’s fair to say that today’s real ale scene would look very different without it. The water used to make X Muse is drawn from an ancient aquifer on Bonnington Estate. Located out to the west of Edinburgh Bonnington Estate is home to the contemporary sculpture park and art gallery Jupiter Artland. This must-see attraction for anyone visiting the Scottish capital is filled with countless artworks from artists such as Antony Gormley Cornelia Parker Anish Kapoor Phyllida Barlow and Andy Goldsworthy. But there are two of particular interest when it comes to X Muse. The first is ‘Cells of Life’ by Charles Jencks comprising eight grass-covered landforms surrounding four lakes at the entrance to the park. The fluid tiers of this piece were the inspiration for this vodka’s striking bottle. The second artwork of note is Ian Hamilton Finlay’s ‘Xth Muse’ a sculpted head of the Archaic Greek poet from the island of Lesbos Sappho. Although much of her work has been lost but what scraps remain continue to influence writers some 2 500 years after her death. As a result she is widely regarded as one of the greatest lyrical poets. Sappho was given the names the ‘The Poetress’ and the ‘Tenth Muse’. The latter moniker and the ‘X’ on the plinth of the statue at Jupiter Artland inspired this vodka’s name and its bottle. Interestingly this is not the first thing Sappho’s name has inspired. The English words ‘sapphic’ and ‘lesbian’ are also inspired by her and her home island. The stories behind X Muse are as complex and intriguing as the vodka itself.
